If you want to learn how to balance your hormones naturally, and in a holistic way, without toxic medication & conventional treatment, here are 7 essential steps.
After spending years sifting through mountains of information on health and healing, detoxing and diets, and embracing emotions; I want you to know these simple yet powerful techniques that can take you from tired, tubby, and temperamental, to feeling fantastic!
Hormones affect EVERYTHING!
They are our essential chemical messengers that affect SO many facets of our overall health.
Our hormones – such as estrogen, testosterone, progesterones, cortisol, insulin etc – are secreted by our endocrine glands & tissue.
The endocrine system works together as a whole, to regulate hormones circulating through our bodies.
If even one has become out of balance, it can cause major symptoms & health problems.
Symptoms & Signs of Hormone Imbalance
- Infertility and irregular periods
- Weight gain or weight loss (that’s unexplained and not due to changes in your diet)
- Depression and anxiety, changes in mood & mood swings
- Fatigue & brain fog
- Insomnia and reduced ability to cope with stress
- Low libido & fertility issues
- Changes in appetite & metabolism, sugar cravings
- Digestive issues
- Hair loss and hair thinning, abnormal hair growth
Should I get a Hormone Test and whats the best one?
If you are really unsure of what’s going on, it can be helpful to order a salivary test or DUTCH test.
Many doctor’s and naturopath’s find Salivary Hormone Testing more accurate than blood testing for very simple reasons. Hormones in saliva are called free or “active” hormones, so this is a measurement of the levels of hormones that your body is actually using.
Salivary testing tells us the levels of ‘bioavailable’ hormones.
Blood tests however, measure both active and inactive hormone all lumped in together, which can give you a VERY different reading when it comes to the effect hormones are actually having in your body.
The DUTCH test is more expensive than salivary, but it will assess your methylation status, as well as hormone levels. It can be important to know how we are methylating oestrogen’s, but there is actually more to the picture than this.
Other biochemical processes like sulphation and glucuronidation are just as important when it comes to maintaining healthy hormone balance.
Personally I believe that these biochemical pathways are far more overwhelmed now than they ever were, in this age of excessive chemicals, which is why we’re seeing an increase in hormone & other related disorders.
So, I’m not necessarily recommending you go out & purchase a test, because I believe that REGARDLESS of what the tests tell you, if you are experiencing symptoms of hormone imbalance, then all of what’s below is important and WILL help.
At which time the tests will be irrelevant!
The actual hormone levels are simply the RESULT of an imbalance & a deeper cause. they are not the problem itself, but a symptom.
Personally I’ve found hormone tests useful at times, however these days I feel that I’d rather just look at healing the underlying causes, or drivers of the imbalance/s, within the endocrine system.

So whats wrong with conventional forms of treatment?
Conventional treatment involves hormone replacement medications, birth control pills, synthetic insulin replacement, thyroid medication & more.
There are 4 main problems with these kinds of medications:
- They create dependencies upon continuing to take pharmaceuticals, often for the rest of your life, to keep unwanted symptoms under control.
- They are actually just masking the symptoms, and not at all solving the underlying problem/s which means you will continue to develop further issues as the imbalance further develops.
- Over time further risk of more serious problems will develop into more chronic illnesses, compounded by the additional toxic burden of the prescription drugs.
- It cultivates the mentality of avoiding responsibility for how this disorder was created in the first place & encourages the common modern-day habit of looking to someone else to ‘fix’ us, or just to take our symptoms away.
So would you like to learn more about how to empower yourself with the ability to deal with the issue without the above complications?
Are you ready to start becoming your own healer and actually deal with the cause/s?
Here are 7 steps:
1. Come Clean!
Back in my days of practicing as a Naturopath & specializing in Electro-dermal screening to identify & treat causes, I learned a very important lesson!
Yes, our bodies are designed to deal with toxic exposure.
We have an extraordinary elimination system which perfectly binds, contains & flushes everyday toxins out of us ….
WHEN IT’S NOT COMPROMISED OR OVERWHELMED!
This is the key, and something not many people understand.
When our systems become:
– Compromised by stress, other imbalances, infection, previous toxic accumulation etc, or
– Overwhelmed by an amount of toxicity it is unable to deal with either at once or on an ongoing basis.
This is when we start to accumulate toxicity as the body attempts to contain it, in lipid-rich tissue. Our elimination systems have become overburdened and can no longer keep up with the flushing out process.
Endocrine tissue is particularly susceptible to this accumulation of toxicity!
Just about every patient I saw, with any type of endocrine imbalance, had a toxic build-up of some kind in endocrine tissue.
So what can we do?
First, eliminate, or at least greatly reduce your toxic exposure from your diet & environment.
You may want to consider taking my free 7-day Toxin-free Life Challenge below which will help you to do this.
2. The all-important Gut Biome & the Inflammation factor
Those with an unhealthy gut biome (lack of beneficial bacteria & an overgrowth of bad bacteria) and/or leaky gut are more susceptible to hormone imbalance, anxiety, depression, weight gain and more.
This is mostly since chronic inflammation just about always stems from the gut, which is an extremely common cause of endocrine imbalance.
Chronic inflammation impacts every aspect of your health. It is most commonly caused by unresolved stress, as well as an imbalanced gut biome, and your diet also has a major impact.
What can we do?
Discover what’s happening in your gut, & receive a personalized plan to correct it.
One of the most effective options for doing this is through Viome.
Viome analyzes your gut using the most cutting-edge technology. It is the only testing technology able to detect both the nutrients and toxins being produced by your microbiome. This enables them to give you personalized recommendations of foods and nutrients to heal your gut.
The goal of the program is to keep you free from chronic conditions.
You can watch this short video to get an idea of what Viome is about.
The most effective way of dealing with chronic inflammation is to address gut healing & balance, and by removing foods that are causing inflammation in the diet.
When you purchase the Viome program, you’ll receive an easy to use at-home kit to collect samples from you. Your samples are tested for all gut microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, bacteriophages, archaea, fungi, yeast, parasites, and more.
You will receive a unique & specific plan to correct your microbiome.
Viome is currently available in USA, Canada and UK. They are quickly adding more countries, so check back again if yours is not available.
We will be putting our whole family on the program this year, and I’ll keep you posted on how it goes!
You can also include anti-inflammatory foods in your diet like turmeric, bromelains are found in pineapple, bioflavonoids in lemons & berries, and hemp oil.
Plus one of the most effective ways to treat chronic inflammation – CBD oil.
3. Deal with any Unresolved Stress & Get better quality sleep
When you are chronically stressed, your body starts converting progesterone into cortisol which further feeds the stress and creates estrogen dominance.
Go here for more about resolving stress holistically.
Did you know that cortisol, the primary ‘stress’ hormone, is regulated at around midnight each night? So people who go to bed late (I’m often guilty!) never truly get a break from their sympathetic flight/fight stress response.
Over time this will keep driving your cortisol levels up higher.
Ideally, try to get to bed by 10 p.m. and stick with a regular sleep-wake-cycle as much as possible.
Regular good sleep patterns helps keep stress hormones balanced!
There are a few other specific factors that are crucial to correct for getting restful sleep. A couple of them are covered here

4. Swap Carbs for Healthy Fats
Once you’ve begun to deal with the 4 major causes above, it’s time to look at your diet.
Your body needs a variety of healthy fats for hormone health since they are the essential building blocks for hormone production!
Healthy fats will also keep inflammation levels low, boost your metabolism and promote weight loss.
Some of my favorite sources of healthy fats are:
- coconut oil & hemp oil
- Hemp seeds, Flax, chia seeds & nuts
- evening primrose oil or borage oil can be taken in supplement form to obtain GLA (gamma-linoleic acid), but this is also found in hemp seeds.
Other nutritional factors to look at:
– methylating factors can be deficient, especially if you know you have MTHFR gene mutation.
– sometimes general liver support and bile support is also needed.
5. Use adaptogenic plant medicine & CBD oil
Adaptogens are a certain class of plant-based medicine that have the ability to support the body to adapt, to self-adjust, to self-regulate & balance. They can improve our bodies overall balance & resilience.
My favorite adaptogens are:
An Ayurvedic herb which is known for its amazing adaptogenic abilities.
I have only just begun to explore the amazing world of medicinal mushrooms. Now, this is one ‘super-food’ that’s surely worthy of its title.
Those who are curious can check out this short video by the founder of Four Sigmatic – a medicinal mushroom company doing some great work
Still, my personal favorite! You can read about it here
6. Use essential oils
Therapeutic essential oils have a particular resonance with the endocrine system.
They are not a ‘cure’ for hormone imbalance, but a powerful support to the endocrine systems overall function & balance.
Plus they have the added benefit of helping enormously with stress & emotional based issues.
They are also the BEST way to go chemical free, and replace all your conventional cleaning & personal products with natural products that smell great and often work miles better anyway!
Here are a few particularly good ones to try, if you already have some of your own oils, for endocrine support:
- Clary sage – hormone balance
- Fennel – gut, metabolism, inflammation
- Rosemary – supports adrenal balance
- Jasmine – supports hormone production, particularly wonderful when hormones are deficient eg. poor libido, fatigue, infertility
- Geranium – general hormone balance
Always dilute! 2% is good generally, but less is more!
The best carrier oil is fractionated coconut oil
The best place to apply is back of the neck, abdomen & thighs, with a roll-on. The throat for thyroid & kidney area for adrenals.
And here are my own 2 favourite blends for endocrine balance:
Just awesome in the bath! (but don’t forget to use either a nice chemical-free bubble bath or a dash of milk to disperse the oils.)
Calm the Dragon! This is an amazing EO blend for that time of the month &/or when you’re feeling like a bit of a dragon! 😮

7. Address deeper emotional imbalances
Your emotions and hormones are intrinsically connected, so by working to balance one, you are impacting the other.
Specific unresolved emotions will impact specific areas of the body & affect particular hormones.
Fear-based emotions cause dis-ease in your reproductive organs, kidneys and adrenals, affecting cortisol levels.
Anger-based emotions such as frustration, impatience and holding onto blame & resentment cause dis-ease in your liver, which can lead to an estrogen imbalance.
For more about resolving emotions go here
Genetics and a new understanding
Often hormone imbalances, such as PMS & thyroid issues, appear inherent within families. Many of the women in my mothers side have parathyroid issues which leads to osteoporosis.
The theory has, up until quite recently, always been that we are simply unlucky if we ‘inherit’ a genetic illness. But science is now providing us with a deeper understanding through ‘epigenetics’.
Epigenetics is based on a new observation & understanding that inherant gene sequences can be expressed in different ways, and these genes can be activated or even switched off.
So what are the signals that turn genes on and off?
Researchers have actually identified that our emotions regulate our gene expression!
So our unresolved emotions play an integral role, and will actually determine whether these gene deficits are actually activated & expressed.
